Sabbath

Sabbath

Meet My Pet

Sabbath is strong willed but obedient. He got his Canine Good Citizen Certification in 1998. He never forgot a friend, never. Sabby loved black and white toys and remembered the name of each of his toys.
Sab had a tough start in life but I believe his years with me helped soothe any of the wounds he incurred during his early months.

Sabby's Shopping Spree

I took Sabby to a yard sale once. There was a box of stuffed animals. I told Sabby he could have one, so he was sniffing thru the toys, pulling them out and placing them on the ground until he came across a black and white bear. He kept that one.
Unfortunately, I made him put the toy down while I went to pay for it. When we returned, a young boy who had watched Sabby 'shop', had the bear in his arms. I mentioned that the dog wanted it, the boy looked up to his mother and said that he wanted it.
So, we let the brat have the slobbered toy. I told Sabby to get another one. Way at the bottom there was one more black and white toy.
Sabby was just so happy! He did 'his ears' and carried his toy in his mouth while we walked home.

Time Out

If I was on the phone, Sabby would get 'concerned' and sometimes would bark at me. This started to become a habit so I had to take action. I began to tell Sabby to 'time out' and I would then walk him to the guest bedroom where I would close the door as I left. After a few weeks of this, I would say 'time out' and Sabbath would actually walk ahead of me and go into the room, turn around while I closed the door.
Sabby eventually stopped the barking while on the phone, but 'time out' became handy for other unacceptable behavior. When we moved to a new house, I had to introduce another room as the 'time out' room. I chose the guest bathroom. Since the room was much smaller than a bedroom, I would not close the door. It got to a point where I could be sitting in the dining room, tell Sabby to time out and he would go trotting off to the guest bathroom and lay down. Later on, I would invite him out and all would be well.
Good boy, Sabby. I love and miss you.
